The Related Products element in GemPages helps you increase AOV through upselling and cross-selling. However, sometimes it may not display correctly on your live store. This article will walk you through how to troubleshoot and fix related products not showing in Shopify.
How to Change Product Order in the Related Products Section?
The Related Products element pulls product data based on collections in your Shopify Admin. As a result, when you edit your product order in your Shopify Admin, the order in the Related Product section will follow through.
To sort or reorder products, follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to Shopify Admin > Products > Collections and select your collection.
Step 2: Inside your collections, select the “Sort” button to organize your products by one of the 8 available order types:
- Best selling: Bestsellers are placed in ascending order.
- Product title A-Z: Organize products in ascending alphabetical order.
- Product title Z-A: Organize products in descending alphabetical order.
- Highest price: Organize products from the highest priced to the lowest priced.
- Lowest price: Organize products from the lowest priced to the highest priced.
- Newest: Organize products from the most recently added.
- Oldest: Organize products from the least recently added.
- Manual: Manually order your product. When this order type is selected, you will be able to grab and reposition products using your mouse.
No need to hit the Save button, as Shopify auto-applies the changes. You’ll see the modified collection move to the top.
Go back to your previous Collections list, and you should see your collection appear at the top of the list, indicating it was modified recently.
Fix: “There is no related product to display.” Error
Sometimes, you will encounter the “There is no related product to display” error message on your live page. This message usually means the Related Products element is not pulling any data.
This error message is usually displayed on your Preview page or live page, and there are two root causes for this. There are two main reasons:
#1. The collection’s URL includes special words
If you have special words such as “frontpage” and “all” present in your collection’s URL handle, chances are the Related Products element will not work correctly and shows no related product at all.
To solve this, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Access your Shopify Admin > Products > Collections and select the wanted collections
Step 2: Inside your collection, scroll all the way down until you see the “Search engine listing preview” section
Step 3: Click on the “Edit website SEO” blue button on the right to expand more editing options
Step 4: Check the “URL and handle” field to see if it contains any of the two special words mentioned above and update this field as needed.
Step 5: Hit “Save” and exit the collection.
Step 6: Go to your GemPages Dashboard, select your page, and enter the Editor.
Step 7: Publish your page again and check the live page for the result.
#2. The main product not assigned to any collections
The Related Products element works by pulling data over from Shopify, and if your main product is not included in any collections, then the Related Products element cannot display any products at all.
To solve this, please consider adding your main product to one of your collections.
Step 1: Go to Shopify Admin > Products > All Products and select your product
Step 2: Inside the product editor page, scroll down to the “COLLECTIONS” section on the right toolbar and click on the “Search for collections” search bar. All your existing collections will appear in a drop-down list.
Step 3: Check all collections from the list and hit “Save” to save your changes.
Step 4: Go to your GemPages Dashboard, select your page, and enter the Editor.
Step 5: Publish your page again and check on the live page for the result.
Fix: Format Mismatch Between Editor and Live Page
If your Related Products element looks different on the live page vs. in the editor, you might be using an older version of the Related Products element.
Solution:
- Simply drag in a new Related Products element
- Remove the old one
- Save and Publish
The Related Products element is a great tool to help you upsell and cross-sell your products. Check out this article for a full introduction to the element.

FAQs
1. Why are the Related Products not showing in my Shopify store?
The most common reasons:
- The product isn’t in a collection
- The collection URL contains restricted handles like frontpage
- The GemPages element is outdated
2. How does the Related Products element determine which items to display?
It pulls from the same Shopify collection(s) your main product belongs to.
3. Can I manually select related products?
Not directly. But you can create a dedicated collection with hand-picked products and assign your main product to it — then use that for the Related Products element.
4. Does the product order in the collection affect the display?
Yes. Use the Manual sort option in Shopify to control the order in which products appear.
