What Are Shopify Tags?
In Shopify, tags are keywords or labels that you can attach to your products, customers, orders, draft orders, blog posts, and transfers. Tags aren’t visible to customers by default, but they play a powerful role behind the scenes to help you:
- Organize content more efficiently
- Filter and search quickly within your Shopify admin
- Create automated collections that display products with specific tags
- Segment customers for marketing campaigns
- Streamline order management
Think of tags as keywords or shorthand identifiers you assign to keep your store data structured and easy to navigate, especially as your catalog grows.
How to Add Shopify Tags (Step-by-Step)
Adding tags is straightforward, and you can do it whenever you create or edit an item. Here is the step-by-step process:
Step 1: Open the details page of the product, customer, order, draft order, blog post, or transfer you want to tag.
Step 2: In the Tags section, start typing the tag you want to add.
- If it already exists, select it from the dropdown list.
- If it’s a new tag, Shopify will create it automatically for you.
Step 3: Click Save to apply the tag to your item.
It’s best practice to develop a consistent naming convention early on so tags stay organized as your store grows.
Note:
- Tag Limits: You can apply up to 250 tags to each product. Tags can have a maximum of 255 characters for products, customers, and blog posts, while orders and draft orders can have up to 40 characters.
- Tag Format: Use only ordinary letters, numbers, and hyphens in your tags. Avoid special characters and keep tags short for ease of use.
